Biennial Sally Banes Publication Prize

This prize honors the publication (book or essay) that best explores the intersections of theatre and dance/movement in the previous two calendar years. The awardee will receive $500 plus a free conference registration. Beginning with 2018, in even-numbered years, this award recognizes books, and in odd-numbered years, this award recognizes essays.


Any independent, tenured, or untenured scholar is eligible.For the 2021 award, eligible essays must have been published in 2019 or 2020. Book nominations should be held for the 2022 award cycle. Addresses of the committee members will be included on the confirmation email received once the award is submitted.


Nominations may come from the author of the work to be considered, any member of ASTR, an editor, or a publisher.


The winning essay will be judged based on:

  • Innovation in methodological approach;
  • Critical and/or historical rigor; and
  • Potential for encouraging future scholarship that will strengthen exchanges between theatre and dance/movement.
