ASTR Stands in Solidarity with the Students of the University of Theatre and Film Arts, BudapestASTR supports the students of the University of Theatre and Film Arts in Budapest, Hungary, as they demand the autonomy of their education and institution.
In July 2020, the Orbán government passed a law that restructures the institutional ownership and leadership of this prestigious 155-year-old art university and appointed a new board of trustees chaired by Attila Vidnyánszky. This aggressive takeover, in which both the politicians and the newly appointed trustees ignored and humiliated the current leadership and faculty, led to the mass resignation of the faculty.
This government has previously taken over some of the greatest theatre companies of Hungary. But now for the first time in almost a decade, members of an institution taken over by the authoritarian government in Hungary have chosen to resist: on the first day of the new board’s tenure, September 1, students took over the building, sealed the entrances to prevent the new trustees from entering the building, and decided to fight for their autonomy. At least a hundred students are committed to camp inside the building until their demands are granted in writing.
