Happy spring!

The Executive Committee had a very productive spring meeting in Minneapolis. I am happy to report that the planning for the Atlanta Conference is well underway. The conference theme Extra/Ordinary Bodies: Interrogating the Performance and Aesthetics of “Difference” is an exciting and very timely subject. Research, conversations, and artistic expressions of “difference” are essential in a climate that is hostile to arts and diversity. We will take advantage of the conference location and make a special effort to connect with scholars from the HBCUs in the area. I am really looking forward to learning about your new research. Please note that the deadline for your submission to Working Sessions is June 1. Don’t forget to identity your second and third choices too. Good luck! For more information, click here →

Last year, we launched the first “ASTR José Esteban Muñoz Target Research Special Working Session” and it was a great success. While the members of the first group continue to develop their work, the second group has been added to this year’s conference. ASTR is committed to providing the initial funding for this multi-year project; however, we also need to seek extra funds to ensure the continuous support of the underprivileged scholars and the cultivation of minoritarian knowledge. We continue to improve our website to make it a central place for members to find resources and information about the Society, and to connect with each other. Please note a new feature of our website: a video of the “Welcome, Plenary 1: The Trans-local and Challenges to Globalisation” of the Minneapolis conference last year. This is our first attempt to provide members a chance to participate in our conference virtually. To watch this video, click here →

Please Note: Member login is required to view the Plenary video.

Other than the website, our ASTR listserv and our Facebook and Twitter pages are other good ways to connect with each other. I hope our conversations continue throughout the year, virtually and transnationally.

To better serve our membership base with our exciting initiatives, programs, and awards, we slightly increased our membership dues by 5%. This new fee will start in the next membership renewing cycle in September.

Good news! ASTR has increased the amount of some awards; we now spend over $30,000 per year on awards. For the upcoming awards with a July 15 deadline, click here →

Please remember to send in your Working Sessions Proposal by June 1. To review the 2017 Working Sessions and make your submission, click here →

I am looking forward to seeing many of you in Atlanta!

Best Wishes,

Daphne Lei
