2019 CFPs Now Open - Apply by Feb 1

On November 7-10 of this year, theatre and performance scholars, artists, activists, and intellectuals will gather in Arlington, Virginia to consider Theatre’s Many Publics. We hope that the ASTR 2019 conference will stimulate thought at the intersection of publicity and performance, invite views of our overlapping fields of inquiry, and showcase promising new research in a multitude of areas.

We will meet in a site that evokes the symbols and devices of state power, contested attempts to define the democratically enfranchised subject, and diverse types of political actions. We are working to bring our conference into contact with local arts and historical heritage institutions to make the most of being near Washington D.C.

We ask you to consider submitting a proposal for a Plenary Presentation, Working Session, Curated Panel, or a “State of the Profession” Field Forum. The CFP portal on ASTR’s website this year is divided into two submission pages: one for Plenaries, and one for the three types of collaborative sessions. As in past years, we expect many Working Sessions to be programmed, but this year, we invite the ASTR community to submit ideas not only for Working Sessions and for Curated Panels related to Theatre’s Many Publics, but also for State of the Profession forums (the latter are distinct from concurrent “Field Conversation” sessions, which will continue). Following on the unusual result of ASTR 2018, we expect this year’s meeting to be one of the largest in the organization’s history, and an important moment for the field to come together.
