From GSC President, David Calder
I’d like to thank all of our outgoing GSC Executive Committee members: Kimi Johnson, outgoing president; Kane Anderson, outgoing vice-president; Jenna Kubly, outgoing (two-term!) secretary; and Sara Armstrong, outgoing representative to ASTR’s Committee on Conferences.
Next, a warm welcome to our incoming GSC Executive Committee: vice-presidents Kellyn Johnson and Eero Laine, secretary Allan Davis, and Debra Caplan, representative to the Committee on Conferences.
At the conference in Montreal, the GSC debuted its new fundraiser, the raffle, which replaced the silent auction of years past. Tickets cost just two dollars, but the raffle raised over $400 for ASTR. We plan to continue with the raffle at the Nashville conference in 2012.
In the coming weeks the GSC Executive Committee and I will be reviewing the notes from our GSC meeting in Montreal and graduate student responses to the conference satisfaction survey. We’ll be using your feedback to determine our priorities for the coming year.
Finally, I want to encourage all graduate student members of ASTR to take an active role in the GSC. Please consider volunteering to serve on one of our five committees: Conference Assistance, Graduate Student Resources, Fundraising, Web, and On Call. Send me an email if you’d like to get involved. I look forward to working with you!
