Grants for Researchers with Heavy Teaching Loads

(This grant was formerly titled "Grants for Researchers at Teaching-Intensive Institutions")

Deadline: March 16, 2012

Purpose: Recognizing the deep disparities in available resources that distinguish institutions across our profession and that ultimately impede exchange between scholars within the broadly defined field of theatre history, the ASTR Grants for Researchers with Heavy Teaching Loads of up to $1000 promote scholarly and practical exchange among theatre historians by providing research opportunities to scholars at institutions with heavy teaching loads and limited support for scholarship. One year’s membership in ASTR and conference registration accompany the award. Generally stated, the goal of the ASTR Grant for Researchers with Heavy Teaching Loads is to ensure that institutional affiliation does not hinder the contributions of individual scholars to debates that concern us all and that are central to ASTR's mission of cultivating scholarship on all aspects of theatre history.

In practical terms, the award provides:

  • research support, which may take the form of contributing towards course release, funding of a research assistant for one academic term, funding to obtain or travel to research materials (i.e., archives, interview subjects), etc.;
  • registration and travel to the annual conference; and
  • one year's membership in ASTR.

Eligibility: Any scholar who holds a full-time faculty appointment at institutions where their teaching load is at least 4 courses a semester (or the equivalent).

Application: Proposals must include:

  • a 1000-word abstract of the proposed research project describing the title, rationale, and work plan of the project; a description of the applicant's appointment and teaching load; the dates and description ("sabbatical," "grant," etc.) of last supported research leave; and the name and contact information for applicant's department chair;
  • a detailed budget justifying all expenses;
  • a copy of the applicant's curriculum vitae; and
  • a letter of support from another member of ASTR who can attest to the importance of the proposed project to theatre studies;
  • OPTIONAL: If there is a proposed course release, please also include a letter from the department head or dean from the recipient's home institution that agrees to the course release.

Send electronic applications ONLY to Leigh Clemons at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Applications should be sent as attachments (.pdf, .doc, or .docx).

Deadline: All application materials must be submitted by March 16, 2012. Applicants are responsible for seeing that letters of support are sent by the deadline.

Evaluation: Applications will be evaluated by a commitee consisting of Leigh Clemons (Chair), Jon Rossini, and Ana Puga according to the following standards:

  • the feasibility of the project in terms of limited temporal scope of the grant;
  • the significance of the project's potential contribution to theatre studies;
  • the applicant's previous supported research leaves/sabbaticals, with preference going to those who have not had recent research leaves;
  • the course load of, and research support available to the applicant; and
  • the potential that the project has for enlarging ASTR's purview and for enriching and diversifying its membership.

Applications are especially welcome from minority faculty and/or faculty teaching at historically Black colleges or other institutions that historically have provided educational opportunities to large minority communities.

Notification: All applicants will be notified by May 20, 2012.
