VISITING SCHOLARS EXCHANGE GRANTS
Deadline: 15 March 2008 - extended to 15 April 2008
Purpose: The purpose of these grants of up to $2000 per annum is to foster the transnational exchange of research between theatre scholars in the U.S. and those abroad, especially research on areas whose performance practices are underrepresented in U.S. theatre scholarship. We encourage work that examines the ways that theatre and performance in different regions of the globe intersect, resist, refract, or negotiate with, each other. U.S. applicants (and, where appropriate, their home institutions) would host a theatre scholar from abroad, whose work focuses on non-U.S. theatre practices, to come to the U.S. and participate in a range of possible activities that could include the following:
- conference participation (especially at ASTR), including co-presented papers, roundtables, etc.
- collaborative research projects (which could take the form of practical work)
- workshops or seminars for students
- public lectures, forums, etc.
In addition, the grant may be used to undertake reciprocal scholarly projects. For example, the U.S. scholar might visit the non-U.S. scholar's home institution to participate in similar activities there. Awardees are encouraged to produce an article-length piece of scholarly writing related to this research for submission to Theatre Survey. While this initiative is intended to support exchange and reciprocal work, in specific circumstances (to be articulated in the application), it could be used for a one-way visit by a scholar from an under-resourced institution, if the application otherwise promises to fulfill the objectives of the award.
Eligibility: Current members of ASTR holding a terminal degree may apply. The visiting scholar need not be a current member of ASTR, but would be encouraged to join if selected.
Application Procedure: Applications must include:
-
an abstract of the project (150 words maximum);
-
a description of the proposed project, including proposed outcomes (e.g. the submission of work to Theatre Survey; a paper at the annual ASTR conference, etc.) (5 pages double-spaced, 1500 words maximum) that includes a project rationale, structure/proposed activities and project timeline, and budget;
-
letter of intent and curriculum vitae from non-U.S. scholar;
-
letter of support from ASTR applicant's department chair;
-
curriculum vitae of ASTR applicant; and
-
indication of financial or in-kind support to be provided by participating institutions or other fundraising
